The Music Mosaic
Music Mosaic
The song I chose for this assignment is “Southern” by Sleeping at Last, you can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v11QQrQeQjY.
Upon going through the album, this specific song stuck out to me. It had a powerful impression on my mind and expresses a journey taking place. There is wonder and beauty in the voyage, and at the end of the song, an even better destination.
Each note, while part of the whole piece of music, is distinctive and soft. This made me think about how that applies to us and the human race. We are, each of us, distinctive beings that make a difference in our friends’ and families’ lives. When looking at the greater whole, we are each quiet and soft. However that does not diminish our importance or distinctiveness. With all of us together, we are a beautiful piece of work. We are His work.
I’m an outdoorsy guy, I love and respect nature. I feel close to Heavenly Father when surrounded by His creations. So, with the terms distinctive and quiet, I thought of the stars. I thought of the snow, of the ocean and its many water drops. These are wonderful examples of being quiet, distinctive, and, together, beautiful. When I hear this piece, I envision blues and purples and whites, along with round shapes.
To fully capture what I visualize, I chose to illustrate my work. Photography, I felt, couldn’t cover it. My only experience and talent in illustration is with the Adobe programs Illustrator and After Effects. So I created still images of scenes and settings using those programs. I feel that many of you will not have difficulty in seeing these images move, as we live in a time where commercials and spots are frequently made with After Effects. As a bonus, I added an abstract piece that nearly perfectly describes what I feel when I listen to this song.
The authorship of these works is three-fold. First, the images that were downloaded and used to help create my settings, are owned by someone else. They were drawn, or maybe simply altered, and I used them. Other images were used as a base or example for what I wanted to do.
Second, I created each image posted here. Some tools I gathered from online, but most of it I created from scratch using Adobe’s After Effects program. This program deserves recognition and a portion of the authorship.
Third, and finally, these images are frozen in time. They are part of a larger story. I created them with a larger story in mind. However, it is now up to you, my audience, to consume them and finish their stories in your own heads. You tell me where your destination lies.
